چکیده

Universal algebra usually considers and examines algebras as static entities. In the mid 80ies Gurevich proposed Abstract State Machines (ASMs) as a computation model that regards algebras as dynamic: a state of an ASM is represented by a freely chosen algebra which may change during a computation. In [8] Gurevich characterizes the class of sequential ASMs in a purely semantic way by five amazingly general and elegant axioms. In [9] this result is extended to boundednondeterministic ASMs. This paper considers the general case of unbounded-nondeterministic ASMs: in each step, an unbounded-nondeterministic ASM may choose among unboundedly many (sometimes infinitely many) alternatives. We characterize the class of unbounded-nondeterministic ASMs by an extension of Gurevich’s original axioms for sequential ASMs. We apply this result to prove the reversibility of unbounded-nondeterministic ASMs.

On the Expressive Power of Unbounded-Nondeterministic Abstract State Machines

Conventional computational models assume a symbolical representation of states. Gurevich’s Abstract State Machines (ASMs) take a more liberal position: any mathematical structure may serve as a state. In [7] Gurevich characterizes the expressive power of sequential ASMs: he defines the class of sequential algorithms by help of only a few, amazingly general requirements and proves this class to ...

A Logic for Non-deterministic Parallel Abstract State Machines

We develop a logic which enables reasoning about single steps of non-deterministic parallel Abstract State Machines (ASMs). Our logic builds upon the unifying logic introduced by Nanchen and Stärk for reasoning about hierarchical (parallel) ASMs. Our main contribution to this regard is the handling of non-determinism (both bounded and unbounded) within the logical formalism. Moreover, we do thi...

On Bounded Exploration and Bounded Nondeterminism

This report consists of two separate parts, essentially two oversized footnotes to the article “Sequential Abstract State Machines Capture Sequential Algorithms” by Yuri Gurevich. In Chapter I, Yuri Gurevich and Tatiana Yavorskaya present and study a more abstract version of the bounded exploration postulate. In Chapter II, Tatiana Yavorskaya gives a complete form of the characterization, sketc...

A Semantic Characterization of Elementary Wide-Step ASMs

Abstract State Machines (ASMs) describe their behavior by a simple, yet expressive program syntax. While such syntax is useful for the application of ASMs as a modeling and specification language, it often complicates theoretical considerations. Gurevich solved this problem for the class of sequential small-step ASMs by proposing an elegant semantic axiomatization for this class. Later, Blass a...

Abstract And-Parallel Machines

And-Parallel Machines* Nachum Dershowitz and Naomi Lindenstrauss Department of Computer Science, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem 91904, Israel The deterministic Turing machine, though abstract, can still be seen as a model of a realistic computer. The same cannot be said for the nondeterministic Turing machine as a model of parallel computing. We introduce several abstract machines with fine-g...
